Albania has seen a surge in tomato production, with the total acreage reaching 6663 ha in 2019. However, in October 2021, crops in the Fier and Berat regions suffered from a mysterious ailment, with symptoms such as discoloration, mosaic, and narrowing of upper leaf blades, and fruits showing brown necrotic spots and wrinkled skin. Tests confirmed these symptoms to be caused by the tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV), marking the first report of this virus in Albania's tomato crops. The virus was identified in all symptomatic plants but not in the asymptomatic ones, and sequences from two isolated symptomatic plants showed over 99% nucleotide identity with isolates from other countries. This discovery highlights the spread of ToBRFV in southern Europe.
