A food security advocacy group, Tugon Kabuhayan, is promoting the consumption of fish as a alternative source of protein due to the increasing prices of meat, largely due to the African swine fever and the rising global costs of corn and soybean, key ingredients in animal feed. Corn prices have risen to USD 234.47 per metric ton in January 2021, up from USD 171.79 in the same period the previous year, and soybean prices have increased to USD 576.3 per metric ton from USD 387.05. The group points out that fish require less feed to produce meat, making them more efficient. They also note that the fisheries sector may be able to respond more quickly to price increases as it is less reliant on imported ingredients. The group also suggests the cultivation of alternative fish feed inputs like algae and copra.
