Artisanal fishermen in Peru are expressing concern over the delay in regulations for Law 31749, which recognizes traditional artisanal fishing and promotes its preservation within five maritime miles. They argue that this delay allows larger vessels to engage in unfair competition by capturing a wider range of species. Miguel Martínez and Isaac Tapia, leaders of artisanal fishing organizations, have appealed to the Minister of Production and the President to expedite the regulation's approval. Additionally, they have requested the lifting of a ban on hammerhead shark captures in Piura and Tumbes, due to concerns about ecological crimes with the current ban. Furthermore, a specialist in fisheries oceanography has highlighted the need for enforcing rules against illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, especially with the Chinese fleet allegedly operating within Peruvian waters.
