The European Union Council's decision to reduce Mediterranean red shrimp catches by 10% and fishing days by 79% has frustrated the Spanish fishing sector, led by CEPESCA. The sector believes these measures, along with previous adjustments, will lead to unsustainable costs and potentially force fishermen to cease operations. The council's proposed use of larger meshes for fishing could further harm catches and economic performance. In contrast, the Atlantic agreement's maintenance of hake quotas and increases in catch limits for other species are seen as positive developments, especially the retention of the Norway lobster quota in the Gulf of Cadiz at 32 tonnes. Additionally, the sector awaits details on funding from the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund to offset these costs.
