Ghana is facing a significant challenge in its cashew nut export business due to poor post-harvest practices, as some farmers and aggregators fail to dry the nuts to the required moisture content of 10%, leading to lower kernel outturn ratios and concerns about quality from international buyers. This issue has resulted in the rejection of Ghanaian cashews and a loss of market trust. To address this, the Tree Crops Development Authority (TCDA) is working on regulations to prevent aggregators from buying undried nuts directly from farmers and to implement mandatory independent quality checks before export. Additionally, TCDA is collaborating with stakeholders to improve prices for farmers and educate them on the importance of drying cashews properly to increase market value.
