Flanders continued to be a net exporter of agricultural products in 2020, with a slight trade deficit in horticultural products despite overall growth in agricultural exports. The report highlights a 1.5% increase in horticultural exports, driven by a surge in fresh fruit imports, and a trade surplus in the export of processed vegetables and fresh fruits like tomatoes and lettuce. The trade surplus in vegetables is largely due to Flanders' leading position in the global market for frozen vegetables, with Germany, France, the Netherlands, and the UK being the main importers. Despite the growth, there are trade deficits in the import and export of certain fresh vegetables and some processed vegetables. The total trade value for vegetables reached 1.6 billion euros, with an increase in exports since 2016, primarily driven by frozen vegetables.
