Portugal: fruits, vegetables, and flowers represent 1,683 million euros of national exports in 2020

Between January and December 2020, the fruit, vegetables, ornamental plants and flowers sector grew 4.4% in value compared to the same period in 2019, reaching 1,683 million euros, according to data published by the National Statistics Institute (INE). In a particularly difficult year for the national economy, the chain observed a positive and dynamic performance, in contrast with most sectors of the national economy, which registered significant drops in their sales abroad. Gonçalo Santos Andrade, president of Portugal Fresh, the association for the promotion of Fruits, Vegetables and Flowers of Portugal, points out that “these are very positive numbers for this sector that is the champion of the national economy, more considering the context of the pandemic than the world goes through.
