The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, has awarded the XXIV Jacumar Prize for research in aquaculture to the Azti Foundation for the work "Method for identifying the sex in fish belonging to the acipenseridae family (sturgeons)," which was received by the director of Market Fisheries and Sustainable Oceans of the entity, Marina Santurtún. The awarded work, the minister highlighted, represents a "scientific and technological milestone" because it establishes an innovative genetic method capable of determining the sex of sturgeon at a much earlier age than was possible until now. This can represent a great potential to improve the efficiency and sustainability in the production of caviar, with the consequent impact on the competitiveness of the activity.
