In October 2024, the Great Britain (GB) milking herd reached a historic low of 1.64 million head, a 0.9% decrease from the previous year, while the overall herd declined by 1.5% to 2.55 million head. This reduction was seen across all age groups except for the 2–4-year bracket, which grew by 2,000 head due to a youngstock boom in 2021. The most significant drop was in the youngstock group under 2 years, down by 23,000 head (2.5%), as farmers adjusted their dairy replacement heifer strategies. This trend is expected to affect the milking herd from 2025 onwards. Despite the decline, improved milk prices and lower input costs may promote herd growth. Notably, cows aged 6-8 and over 8 years saw a reduction of over 16,000 head, reflecting a shift towards greater herd efficiency and better genetics.
