Georgia has updated its Technical Regulation on Hazelnuts in response to recommendations from the European Commission's DG SANTE, following an audit in 2023. The amendments, summarized by EastFruit and Business Georgia, introduce measures to prevent and decrease aflatoxin content in hazelnuts. Business operators are now responsible for implementing these measures across production, processing, transportation, and storage processes. Additionally, samples of export nuts must be tested in an accredited laboratory following the ISO/IEC 17025 standard. The regulation applies to uncracked hazelnuts, hazelnut kernels, and processed hazelnut kernels intended for direct consumption or to be mixed with other food products.
