In 2023, German households purchased less meat and cold cuts, with sales dropping by 0.7% to 2.71 million tons, according to the Thünen Institute. This decrease was due to a 6.5% rise in prices. Despite the overall decline, discount stores saw an increase in sales. Meat substitute sales also fell, while organic meat and cold cuts sales remained steady. Pork sales dropped by 6.6% due to a significant price hike, but poultry meat sales rose by 2.8%.
