In response to a severe ginger blight outbreak, the Vice President's office directed the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to take action. Consequently, Minister Sen. Abubakar Kyari established the National Ginger Blight Epidemic Control Taskforce, headed by Engr. Abubakar Abdullahi. The taskforce, comprising key agricultural officials, presented a Ginger Seed Road Map and highlighted the expenditure of N1.6 billion by the NADF to aid affected farmers. Major challenges identified include the absence of a formal seed system and the need for disease-resistant ginger varieties. Recommendations were made for NRCRI to spearhead research and NASC to set up seed certification protocols, along with emphasizing farmer training and the development of new ginger varieties.
