A heatwave across Europe has led to a significant increase in cucumber prices, almost doubling in some countries due to high demand and lower supply. The rise in production costs is putting pressure on margins for growers, with the Netherlands questioning the profitability of winter cultivation and retailers in the US focusing on local production to combat high fuel costs. Conventional and organic cucumber growers are planting for the autumn and winter campaign, despite high prices being historically high due to supply reductions. Mexico, the world's largest cucumber exporter, ships the majority of its production to the US, which is the world's largest importer. The US International Trade Commission reports that Mexican cucumbers contribute to satisfying domestic demand and were among the top 20 food and beverage exports in 2019.
