Dry weather in Ukraine and Russia has led to a combined 1.5-million-ton decline in sunflowerseed yields, resulting in a 5.5 million ton drop in the initial forecasted production and a year-to-year decline of 4.8 million tons. This reduces the global sunflowerseed production to 5.3 million tons below 2019/20, with additional declines forecast for the European Union, Kazakhstan, Turkey, and Argentina. Despite this, the 2020/21 global harvest is still expected to be the third largest ever. The decrease in sunflower meal and oil availability, coupled with stronger global demand and tightening oilseed markets, has led to an increase in prices for these products and other major vegetable oils.
