Thailand has initiated a comprehensive plan, titled "Big Cleaning," to eradicate three million kilogrammes of the invasive blackchin tilapia. This initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Fisheries in collaboration with several other agencies, aims to use eco-friendly methods to remove the fish from both natural water bodies and aquaculture farms. The captured fish will be lawfully utilized, and the progress of the campaign will be transparently communicated to stakeholders. The government has allocated 60 million baht from the Farmer Aid Fund to finance the project, which includes biological control methods and innovative techniques to induce sterility in the invasive fish. Additionally, the campaign focuses on ecosystem rehabilitation and the release of native aquatic species to enhance biodiversity.
