In 2020, Belgium experienced a shift in its agricultural landscape due to adverse weather conditions in the previous year. The sowing of winter crops saw a significant decrease with winter wheat down by 6.2%, winter barley by 9.1%, and triticale by 16.7%, totaling a loss of 17,372 hectares. Conversely, the sowing of summer cereals increased, with spring wheat up by 75.6% and spring barley by 39.3%. The surface area for industrial crops like flax grew by 2.6%, largely due to a 24.3% increase in fiber flax. However, the cultivation of sugar beet and rapeseed decreased by 1,988 hectares. The total area for potatoes also saw a slight decrease by 851 hectares. The surface area for strawberries fell by 2%, but the total surface area of vegetables increased by 4.9%. The number of farms in Belgium slightly decreased by 0.3% to 35,996, occupying an agricultural area of 1,367,082 hectares, with nearly 35% of this area being permanent grassland.
