A study by the University of Valladolid has found that farmers growing cereals such as wheat and barley have not covered their production costs despite "exceptionally good" harvests this year, meaning the only incentive to continue cultivation is the receipt of European CAP subsidies. Through a statement, the agricultural professional organization Asaja of Castilla y León has detailed that to cover the production costs of wheat, it would be necessary to sell, depending on the province, between 185 and 215 euros per tonne, while for barley the reference prices would be between 186 and 210 euros per tonne. However, the study referred to by Asaja, commissioned by the Junta de Castilla y León, suggests that the market has paid for these productions below these thresholds and the Chain Law has been violated in sales transactions.
