The British Agriculture and Horticulture Promotion Agency (AHDB) has reported a 17% decrease in meat production in February 2023, with pork production down by 21% year-on-year. This is due to UK pig farmers reducing their livestock numbers due to high production costs, leading to economic losses. The average weight of slaughter pigs has also decreased. The decrease in livestock is expected to cause supply bottlenecks in 2023, leading to a 15% decrease in pork production and a 10% increase in pork imports.
