The European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom have reached an agreement on fishing opportunities for 2025 in shared waters, which the EU Council states includes over 80 total allowable catches (TACs) of jointly managed fish stocks. The pact guarantees the community club's fleet 428,000 tons of fish, valued at nearly 1.4 billion euros, and provides reciprocal access to albacore fishing waters. The negotiations were based on scientific advice and socio-economic considerations, with an aim to prevent overfishing and allow stock recovery. Separately, the EU has also agreed on quotas and reciprocal access to Norwegian waters, although an agreement on blue whiting and Atlanto-Scandinavian herring is still pending.
