A recent study led by Ali Montazar, UC Cooperative Extension irrigation and water management advisor, in collaboration with other scientists, has received $86 million to investigate the water usage of date palms in California's Coachella Valley, which is home to half of the US's date production. The research aims to enhance irrigation management and optimize water use efficiency by determining the evapotranspiration rate and crop coefficients for California date palms. Conducted across six orchards representing various conditions, the study's findings are expected to have a global impact and support sustainable cultivation practices amidst dwindling water resources. Funded by the CDFA Specialty Crop Block Grant Program, the research underscores the importance of advancing the sustainability and efficiency of specialty crop production.
