Italy: Growing opportunities for organic apples in Europe

Italy has seen a stable but growing market for organic apples, with the sector expanding to 9,000 hectares in 2023, occupying 5-10% of the total market. The production volume reached over 200,000 tonnes, with the majority grown in three regions. International demand, particularly from Germany and France, has contributed to the market's growth. The Benelux countries are also experiencing strong demand for Italian organic apples, expected to grow at a CAGR of over 10% until 2027. Italian consumers prefer organic apples for their health, environmental, and quality benefits, and are willing to pay higher prices for certified organic products. The challenge for the industry is to continue to innovate while maintaining sustainability, with the Gala and Candine varieties being representative of this balance. The It's Bio project, backed by the European Union and the AOP Vi.Va Group, aims to further promote Italian organic apples and the sustainable practices behind their production.
