The USDA's Animal and Phytosanitary Inspection Service (APHIS) has approved quality evaluation standards for Guatemalan avocados as of March 28, paving the way for Guatemala to potentially boost its avocado exports to the U.S. With a projection of exporting over 15 thousand tons of avocados in 2023, Guatemala is leveraging its increased production capacity and the growing demand for avocados. The country's avocado production saw a 70% increase over the past decade, reaching 136,476 tons in 2021. So far in 2023, Guatemala's avocado exports have amounted to 16 million dollars, primarily to the Netherlands. APHIS has confirmed that Guatemala's phytosanitary measures are adequate for mitigating risks associated with U.S. imports, requiring adherence to an operational plan that complies with its guidelines. The public has until May 28 to review and comment on APHIS's pest analysis and mitigation strategies.
