(Gunsan=Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Jin-bang = The Jeonbuk Gunsan Agricultural Technology Center urged farmers on the 16th to sow barley, wheat, and other cereals in a timely manner and disinfect the seeds to ensure stable production.
This year, due to the impact of global warming, the sowing period has been delayed by about seven days compared to the average year, according to the center. Therefore, the optimal sowing period for cereals in the Gunsan area is late October to early November.
The center explained that barley and wheat need to have five to six main leaves before the onset of full winter to safely survive the winter.
If cereals are sown too early, the ears can grow inside the stems before winter, making them susceptible to cold damage. Conversely, if sown too late, the germination period is delayed, leading to insufficient growth, freezing to death, or reduced yield.
The appropriate sowing amount is 16 to 20 kg per 1,000 square meters, and if the sowing period is delayed, it is recommended to increase the amount by 20 to 30%.
Furthermore, seeds harvested from fields affected by diseases and pests last year or seeds distributed from external sources must be disinfected to prevent diseases and pests such as red mold and stripe disease.
Park Yong-woo, head of the city's technology dissemination division, said, "The main causes of reduced yield in barley and wheat cultivation are frost damage, waterlogging, and diseases and pests, so farmers need to pay attention to timely sowing, seed disinfection, and drainage management."
