Guyana's Fisheries Minister, Zulfikar Mustapha, has identified aquaculture as a key sector with great potential due to the country's flat lands, suitable soil types, and access to large quantities of good quality freshwater. The country has been producing a variety of fish and shrimps, with a total production of 121 tonnes in 2020, a decrease from 2019. The government is planning to expand the current 350 hectares of aquaculture land and has received support from the FAO to strengthen the regulatory framework for the sector. The 2021 budget allocation includes $293 million for the sector's development, including a research programme to reduce feed costs.
