The price of hazelnut oil in Turkey has surged by 130% in the past year, reaching 50 lira per liter, the same price as olive oil. The increase is attributed to heightened demand during the pandemic and a scarce harvest, exacerbated by recent droughts. This price hike is part of a broader trend in record price increases in vegetable oils globally. Despite strong international demand, Turkey's ability to export hazelnut oil is hampered by insufficient supply. Additionally, Turkey's hazelnut yield, currently around 1.5 million tons, is facing pressure from more efficient producers like China and Argentina, which achieve yields of 500 kilograms and 350 kilograms per acre, respectively. This underscores the need for Turkey to enhance its production efficiency to remain competitive in the global market.
