The National Agricultural Research Institute (INIA) of Uruguay has developed a Temperature and Humidity Index (ITH) app to forecast high temperature days that can cause thermal stress in cattle and sheep, leading to production losses and physiological changes. The app, available online and as a mobile app, provides seven days of advanced climatic condition information to help livestock producers make informed decisions on preventing heat stress in animals. The app's use is crucial, as research shows significant milk and meat production drops without heat mitigation strategies. The app's recommendations include providing free access to good quality fresh water, avoiding cattle movement during peak heat hours, providing natural or artificial shades, and changing feeding schedules to avoid overheating.
