The article highlights the challenges posed by non-biodegradable price look up (PLU) labels on fresh produce, which are contaminating compost and leading to environmental issues like food waste and methane emissions. To address this issue, the USDA is investing in research to develop compostable PLU labels, leveraging funding from the Technical Assistance for Specialty Crops Program. This initiative aims to develop food-safe, compostable adhesives that meet European standards, in collaboration with the International Fresh Produce Association and Sinclair Systems International. The goal is to reduce environmental impact, help U.S. exporters comply with regulations, and create a more sustainable agricultural supply chain. Research on potential compostable adhesives is ongoing, with plans to scale up the coating trials for commercialization. The USDA is also working with the IFPA to educate U.S. produce exporters on the benefits of greener labels to mitigate trade barriers and minimize environmental footprint.
