The Ministry of Agriculture of Buryatia in Russia is planning to start cultivating high-margin oilseeds, including technical hemp and rapeseed, across 1245 hectares in 2022, up from 260 hectares in 2021. The trial run in 2021 showed promising results in terms of yield and profitability. Hemp is expected to be used for hemp oil, textile, and building materials, while rapeseed will be used for oil, livestock feed, and diesel fuel. Despite the challenges like the risk of pollination with wild hemp and the lack of necessary knowledge among farmers, the high market demand and profitability are expected to drive mass cultivation in Buryatia. Farmer Tamir Shagdarov plans to increase the sown area and expand the production of oil and animal feed.
