Since November, the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) has reported outbreaks and deaths among horses due to equine herpesvirus type 1 in three regions of France. The first cases were reported after national and international competitions in Le Mans in November 2024. As of December 9, 2024, the Equine Pathology Epidemiological Surveillance Network (Respe) had identified 10 outbreaks, with over a dozen horses dead and more recovering. The virus, transmitted through direct contact or droplets, causes symptoms like respiratory and neurological abnormalities, abortions in mares, and death of foals. The FEI recommends limiting horse-to-horse contact, and the Polish Horse Breeders Association suggests vaccination and provides a guide on combating the virus.
