A recent outbreak of the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (GAAP) of the H5N1 subtype in Portugal has led to the establishment of health restriction zones to control the spread of the infection. The virus has affected poultry in several areas, resulting in significant losses and necessitating the suspension of the marketing of live birds and their products from the affected regions. The outbreak has prompted the authorities to prohibit certain activities involving poultry and captive birds in the protection and surveillance zones, with violations subject to legal penalties. Poultry slaughterhouse operators are required to receive the Food Chain Information (IRCA) at least 24 hours before receiving animals, adding an extra layer of safety measures to prevent the spread of the virus.
