Portugal: in the first half of this year there was a 5.7% increase in the slaughter of pigs

According to data published by the GPP, provided by INE as preliminary data regarding pig slaughter in Portugal in the 1st semester of 2025, and when compared with the same period of 2024, these present the following variations. In relation to fattening pigs, there was an increase of 5.7% in the total number of pigs slaughtered, rising from 1,911,560 pigs slaughtered in the 1st semester of 2024 to 2,020,276 heads slaughtered in 2025. The total weight of slaughter increased by 6.6%. The total weight went from 166,601.6 tons in 2024 to 177,597.4 tons this year. There was a slight decrease in the slaughter of piglets for roasting, which was reflected in -1%, or fewer 5,540 heads in this 1st semester of 2025 when compared with the same period of 2024. The total weight of slaughter decreased by 1.3%, having gone from 3,825.9 tons in 2024 to 3,771.3 tons in 2025.
