The Bangladesh government has imposed a two-month ban on fishing in the Meghna River from March 1 to April 30 to conserve mother Hilsa and Jatka during their breeding season. The ban, which covers a 100-kilometer breeding ground of Hilsa, is part of efforts to increase Hilsa production through preservation of the fish and its breeding ground. During the ban period, activities such as preserving, collecting, transporting, marketing, and storing Hilsa are illegal. The government will enforce the ban with a zero-tolerance policy and will conduct regular drives to prevent Hilsa fry. Additionally, 4,535 tonnes of rice have been allocated to the 28,344 registered fishermen in the district, and each fisherman's family will receive 40kgs of rice for four months.
