(Hongcheon=Yonhap News) Reporter Im Bo-yeon = Hongcheon County and the Hongcheon Women Farmers' Association Council held the 4th Hongcheon Women Farmers' Day event on the 17th.
October 15th every year is the "World Women Farmers' Day" established by the United Nations (UN) in 2007 to highlight the role and contribution of women in rural areas.
Hongcheon County has been holding annual commemorative events since 2022 to boost the morale and pride of women farmers and contribute to making Hongcheon a women-friendly city.
This year's event was attended by members of five women farmers' organizations, including the Hongcheon County Federation of Women Farmers, the Hongcheon Women Farmers Association, the Hongcheon County Federation of the Central Association for Living Improvement, the Hongcheon County Federation of Farmers' Housewives, and the Hongcheon Women Farmers' Comprehensive Support Center.
The event featured a variety of activities, including awards for outstanding women farmers, performances to promote local agricultural products, recreation, experience and exhibition programs, and a prize draw.
The "Promotion of Our Potatoes Consumption Performance," introduced for the first time this year, was held to protect the value of local agricultural products and encourage consumption in response to the spread of GMO potatoes, and to publicize the excellence of "Hongcheon Our Potatoes."
Kim Myeong-gi, the mayor of Hongcheon County, said, "I deeply appreciate the hard work of women farmers who have been quietly supporting the community in the agricultural sector" and "I hope this event will be a meaningful occasion for improving the status of women farmers and achieving gender equality in agriculture and rural areas."
