The egg industry is experiencing price fluctuations due to the spread of High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza (HPAI) from wild birds, with the majority of outbreaks affecting cage-free flocks, which make up 40% of the total US egg supply. The loss of laying hens due to HPAI in 2024 has been significantly lower than in 2022, but has still contributed to tighter supplies and record high egg prices. Additional factors contributing to the high and fluctuating prices include forced molting, changes in seasonal demand patterns, and retail featuring of eggs. Despite the loss of 2.3% of the total table egg laying flock, production in October was down by 4.2% from the previous year, with retail supply and price variations largely due to factors other than HPAI.
