Horseradish: an essential accompaniment to the Easter table

Hungary is one of the largest horseradish producers in the EU. Horseradish consumption increases at Easter, and a large part of the domestic crop is exported. Hungary is one of the European horseradish production powers. About 10-11 thousand tons of horseradish are harvested annually from nearly 1,250 hectares. This accounts for more than a third of the total EU production. Production is almost entirely concentrated in Hajdú-Bihar County (98% of the production area is located here), where traditions and suitable soil conditions also help the sector. The majority of horseradish products available in domestic stores come from domestic production, meaning that Hungarian consumers predominantly put domestic horseradish on the Easter table. As Easter approaches, the demand for horseradish increases dramatically from year to year.
