Hungary is the leading producer of horseradish in the European Union, accounting for nearly half of the EU's annual production. In 2021, the country produced over 12,000 tons of the root on nearly 1,267 hectares. Despite the effects of drought, the harvested horseradish outperformed foreign varieties in dry matter content. The majority of the production is exported to Germany, Poland, the UK, and the Czech Republic. The plant, native to Hungary, is primarily grown in the Hajdú-Bihar county and provides livelihoods for many.
