India's shrimp industry has seen a significant growth in 2019, with a 31% increase in production to 804,000 tons and an 8% rise in exports to 667,140 tons, primarily due to a surge in demand for animal protein during the COVID-19 pandemic. The US remained India's leading shrimp supplier, followed by China, the European Union, Japan, Vietnam, and the UAE. However, the industry faces challenges such as a shortage of shrimp seed and a decrease in demand due to restaurant closures during the pandemic. In response, the Indian government has pledged to guarantee a minimum price for farmers and is taking steps to increase shrimp seed production. The country also experienced a decline in fish meal and oil production in the first quarter of 2020, compared to the same period in 2019.
