The Indian cardamom plantation sector has been adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic due to the unavailability of migrant labor and marketing facilities. In response, the Spices Board India has initiated e-auctions and developed standard operational procedures for the sector. The Directorate of Arecanut & Spices Development (DASD) mentioned that the sector has also been impacted by unprecedented floods and dry spells, with major impact in the states of Kerala and Karnataka. The Spices Board is implementing schemes to assist farmers and encouraging area expansion in non-traditional areas. The board also recognizes the best cardamom farmers annually to encourage improvement in productivity.
