Beekeeping is vital to the Hungarian, EU, and global economy, with the sector contributing around 1 billion euros in value and pollinating fruit trees, leading to increased agricultural production. The European Union is the world's largest honey producer and importer, with an annual production of 250 thousand tons and imports primarily from China and Ukraine. Hungary, with over 21 thousand apiaries and a history of beekeeping, has seen a decline in honey production due to factors like summer droughts and spring frost, although there has been a revival in recent years with tax exemptions and targeted support. The average price of honey in Hungary has decreased so far in 2024, but it is expected to increase due to higher consumption in the autumn-winter months. Hungary exports honey to countries like Italy, Germany, and France, although the value of exports has been decreasing in the past 1-2 years.
