The Great Plain is slowly becoming unsuitable for corn cultivation, as more and more Hungarian farmers are realizing due to the successive years of drought. Hungarian corn growers have sounded the alarm. Last year, they frequently complained about the dry weather, which resulted in a national harvest of just over 5 million tons, with an average yield of 5.8 tons per hectare from 865 thousand hectares. This year, the cultivated area has shrunk somewhat, and the situation has also deteriorated, with the latest forecast speaking of a yield of 5.6 tons per hectare and a total harvest of 4–4.2 million tons. Where is the "golden year" of 2023, when an average of 8.2 t/ha yielded 6.3 million tons of corn in the country? The second year of rainfall shortage is pressing, and unless the size of the irrigable areas expands more rapidly, we must slowly declare that the Great Plain is unsuitable for the cultivation of this crop.
