Hungary can become a net exporter of fresh tomatoes

According to the European Commission, the EU's total tomato harvest in 2023 may be 4 percent more (16.8 million tons) than a year earlier, but the increase only affects tomatoes for industrial purposes, the amount of tomatoes destined for the fresh market is again 6.3 million can be around 100,000 tons - according to AKI's latest market report. High prices were observed on the EU market for fresh tomatoes throughout the year. In October 2023, the combined net producer price of spherical, cluster and cherry tomatoes was 2.09 euros per kilogram on average, 24 percent higher than a year earlier. The community imports a lot of fresh tomatoes. The imported quantity increased by 7 percent to 521,000 tons in the first 8 months of the year, while exports did not even reach half of this: it decreased by 5 percent to 240,000 tons.
