Hungary is the leading producer of horseradish in the European Union, accounting for nearly half of the EU's annual production of about 30,000 tons. In 2020, Hungary produced 12,000 tons on a 1,400 hectare area, with most of it being exported to Germany, the UK, Poland, and the Czech Republic. The plant, native to Hungary, is mainly grown in the Northern Great Plain and is particularly suited for its pungent variety, which is used in food industry and medicine. The root is used in various preserves and as a seasoning, and the freshly grated horseradish is rich in vitamin C and has therapeutic properties for urinary tract and kidney infections, cough, hoarseness, and tracheal and chronic bronchitis.
