Hungary is a major producer of horseradish in the European Union, accounting for nearly half of the EU's annual production with over 10,000 tons last season. The country's phased harvesting and storage technology enable it to supply more than half of the European market until the new crop is ready. Additionally, around 80-90% of the horseradish is exported to countries such as Germany, Poland, the UK, and the Czech Republic. The cultivation of horseradish, a native plant to Hungary, is concentrated in a single district and employs many families. The product, which has been protected since 2008, plays a crucial role in the economy and provides significant employment in the Hajdúság farmland.
