Hutchinsons' northern maize trials, hosted by the Fisher family near Carlisle, highlighted the importance of tailoring maize variety to drilling dates and dealing with unpredictable weather. The trials, which involved 30 new and established varieties, showed that choosing the right variety for the drilling window and growing conditions can significantly affect crop establishment and yield. The trials also indicated that placing phosphorus fertiliser with the seed can improve nutrient use efficiency and yield potential. Additionally, the trials suggested that undersowing with grass can be beneficial, but the sowing rate and method depend on the maize variety and the type of grass being used. The trials also noted the need to consider the timing of pre-emergence grassweed herbicides and the potential for grazing undersown grass.
