Global coffee exports increased by 1.5% in December 2020 compared to the previous year, reaching 10.97 million bags. The first three months of the 2020-2021 crop year saw a 6.1% increase in exports, with arabica exports rising by 14.1% and robusta exports falling by 6.8%. Despite a slight decrease in global coffee production in the 2019-2020 crop year, mainly due to a decline in Brazilian arabica production, a 1.9% increase is expected in the 2020-2021 crop year. This is driven by an estimated 5.2% increase in arabica production, largely from Brazil and Colombia, despite a predicted 2.6% drop in robusta production, primarily in Vietnam. However, global coffee consumption decreased by 2.4% in the 2019-2020 crop year due to an economic slowdown and COVID-19 measures, though a slight increase is anticipated in the 2020-2021 crop year. This comes as global coffee production is projected to exceed demand, leading to a surplus of 5.27 million bags by the end of the 2020-2021 crop year.
