Georgian farmers are seeking government intervention to curb the influx of kiwi imports from Iran, asserting that Iranian kiwis are fraudulently labeled as Georgian products in Japan. They are also pushing for the enforcement of a resolution that imposes fines on exporters who violate labeling regulations. The farmers believe that with improved administration, Georgia can independently supply the Japanese market with quality kiwis, thereby aiding their recovery. In the first nine months of 2024, Georgia imported 1,980 tons of kiwis, primarily from Iran, marking a record high.
