[Rural Economy and Agriculture Newspaper=Reporter Kim Shin-ji] Recently, as the volume of imported goat meat has increased sharply in the domestic goat meat market, there is a suggestion that the introduction of a traceability system is necessary to promote the consumption of domestic goat meat and to protect goat farmers. According to the Korea Rural Economic Institute, the volume of imported goat meat increased by about 5.2 times from 1,570 tons in 2015 to 8,143 tons last year, and the self-sufficiency rate of goat meat stood at 37.7% as of 2023. In response, those involved in the goat industry pointed out that although the number of domestic goat farms, which stood at 12,630 as of 2023, is the second highest among major livestock species after Hanwoo, there is a lack of systems and statistics to manage them.
