The North West Red Meat Producers Organization (NWRPO) in South Africa is urging farmers to adopt sustainable practices and enhance the red meat value chain amidst challenges like rising costs, drought, and weaker meat prices. Led by Nico Kilian, the NWRPO focuses on biosecurity and top genetics, while addressing issues such as foot-and-mouth disease and livestock profitability. The RPO, with CEO Dr. Frikkie Maré, collaborates with the government to support producers and manage industry challenges. Meanwhile, the LITS SA traceability system is not expected to become national soon, with private systems filling the gap. Meat exports remain vital, and import bottlenecks from Namibia and Botswana cause delays at abattoirs, particularly in February.
