The Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC) stated that the primary factor leading to the decline in export volume was the new 15% tariff imposed by the United States on seafood products from Norway and the European Union starting from August 7.
This caused the total export volume of seafood from Norway to the U.S. market to decrease by 3% in August, with salmon exports alone plummeting by 15%.
For the first five months of this year, the United States had been Norway's largest single seafood market, with seafood exports to the U.S. increasing by 38% in the first half of 2025.
In August, the U.S. dropped to third place in the main export markets for Norwegian seafood, surpassed by Poland and China.
