In 2021, the Moldovan fruit and vegetable market has seen a shift in the source of supply for domestic markets. While the pandemic had led to supermarket chains sourcing more locally in 2020, this trend has reversed in 2021 with a return to bulk imports. This has resulted in stationary markets, bazaars, and temporary weekend fairs becoming the primary source of income for fruit farmers. Large farms supply through stationary markets, while small farmers specializing in vegetables and niche berries dominate the weekend fairs. These fairs, known for higher prices, are marketed as supporting local small producers who use fewer fertilizers and pesticides. The Chisinau municipality has also increased the number of authorized stationary markets and weekend fairs for the coming months.
